“ Sometimes, I feel discriminated against, but it does not make me angry. It merely astonishes me. How can any deny themselves the pleasure of my company?
It is beyond me.”
― Zora Neale Hurston
Katrina
founder AND MODERATOR
Hey there! My name is Katrina, and I'm so excited to share my passion for the arts with you. As a filmmaker, producer, and certified member of the Beyhive, reading has always been an important part of my life. From the shy little girl who used reading as an escape, to the vocal woman I am today, books have always been there for me, offering new worlds to explore, helping me put my own truth to paper and even making characters feel like friends. That's the magic of reading, and I can't wait to share that with you!
That's why I'm inviting you to join me once a month for a personal and intimate discussion about some of the most fantastic books out there. We'll talk about how reading can help us discover ourselves, and the importance of seeing ourselves represented in the art and media we consume. It's an opportunity for BIPOC women like us to come together, connect, and create a community of support and belonging. I'm so excited to get to know you and have these conversations with you! Let's dive into some amazing books together!

Bukhosi has gone missing.
His father, Abednego, and his mother,
Agnes, cling to the hope that he has run away, rather than been murdered by government thugs.
Only the lodger seems to have any idea...
Zamani has lived in the spare room for years now. Quiet, polite, well-read and well-heeled, he's almost part of the family - but almost isn't quite good enough for Zamani. Cajoling, coaxing and coercing Abed and Agnes into revealing their sometimes tender, often brutal life stories, Zamani aims to steep himself in borrowed family history, so that he can fully inherit and inhabit its uncertain future.
“We write for the same reason that we walk, talk, climb mountains or swim the oceans – because we can. We have some impulse within us that makes us want to explain ourselves to other human beings.”
– Maya Angelou
